The Pinnacle is considered one of the best sections of Pennsylvania's portion of the Appalachian Trail. It's located near the small town of Hamburg, perhaps best known now for its Cabelas store. Cabelas is OK for hunters and fisherman, but for the hiker, the draw is the AT!

Directions:

From the West:

  • I-78 to Exit 30 (Hamburg)
  • Head south on 4th Street
  • At first red light, turn left on State St. Under light is a sign No Turn on Red 6 AM to 10 PM.
  • State Street becomes Old Highway 22
  • Left on Reservoir Road (a little past a church on the right)
  • Follow Reservoir Road until it dead-ends. Park on the left side.

From the East:

  • I-78 to Exit 35 (Lenhartsville)
  • Turn south onto Route 143 towards Lenhartsville.
  • In about 1/4 of a mile, you'll arrive at a stop sign at a "T" in the road. Turn right onto Old Highway 22.
  • Stay on 22 for about 3 miles then make a right on Reservoir Road
  • Follow Reservoir Road until it dead-ends. Park on the left side.

The hike can be done as an out-and-back along the AT, a car shuttle, or as a loop (and a couple ways to do the latter). Doing the loop is about 9 miles and involves about 800 feet of elevation gain. The AT is rocky in places and can be tough on the feet.
